Happy Birthday Galileo!
Quick post for today – February 15th – reportedly the birth date of Galileo Galilei (1564.) Of the countless brilliant things he reportedly said, these quotes caught my eye today and seem relevant o me.
“You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself.”
– Yup, absolutely! In my service to addicted souls, I have learned beyond the shadow of a doubt that ‘recovery is an inside job.’ And while people can share their experience and describe tools for others to use, only when the learner truly internalizes them can they help.
“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.”
– Yes, I agree. When we encounter the truth – an important truth – we have that ‘Aha moment.’ By being a curious observer we can all discover important things. Curiosity feels good; it’s actually chemically rewarded in our brain. So without allowing frustration to creep in, seek to solve puzzles, discovery answers, find new truths. Your brain will feel good when you do.
Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so.
– I think that the ‘BESOCHEMPS’ model of addiction goes a long way toward measuring or defining the 5 distinct aspects of addiction (the 5 distinct types of wants.) If you don’t fully understand BESOCHEMPS, get with me by phone, web, group, text, email,… anything but smoke signals! 😉 You should know BESOCHEMPS because it will make an overwhelming and immeasurable problem, suddenly measurable. That, my brave friend, can be the beginning of the end of the leash!
