Emotional Urges
“BESOCHEMPS”
EM-otional Urges
EMotional urges can lead us to want to smoke (or use other substances/behaviors) as a means of avoiding unpleasant feelings. If we are feeling, for example, anxious, we’ve learned to reach for the “relief” of a cigarette. The nicotine in our brain results in the release of endorphins, which make us feel better emotionally.
Since that “relief” comes quite quickly, we learn to eliminate unpleasant feelings by sucking soot. Again, because this illusion of relief happens so quickly, we may not have bothered to develop many other coping skills.
I say “illusion of relief” because ironically, if we’re anxious, our heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate are probably ALREADY slightly elevated because of our mood state. When we inhale a chemical cloud, the nicotine constricts our blood vessels as those toxic chemicals are delivered to our cells and organs throughout our body. Our organs start to feel toxic and call for our heart to beat faster to deliver oxygen – which is in short supply while we’re smoking.
To offset the pollutants currently flowing through our veins to our cells and organs, our lungs breathe faster in order bring in more REAL oxygen. So our heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure (which were already elevated) are now all EVEN MORE elevated because of the smoking. PHYSICALLY, smoking a cigarette causes MORE stress, even as the brain releases the endorphins that make us “feel better.” THAT, my friends, is tobacco’s best lie; “I’ll make you feel better.”
Let’s fill our coping tool box with some new skills and ways to feel better that are actually better. That will take time and practice, and a commitment to taking good care of you.

I’ve rarely heard a quote more true or more powerful than Viktor Frankl’s observation (admonition) regarding stimulus and response. “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.” In that space lies our salvation, our freedom, our power, […]

We hear and say that phrase often. So often, in fact, that we may not really hear it. But if we really mean it when we say it, what does it mean? What are we wishing for the one we say it to? What are we aspiring to for ourselves if we decide to “make

Everybody falls short, falls off the wagon, fumbles, stumbles, slips up, gives up, or gives in. It happens…to everyone! Disclaimer: I don’t believe in jinxes or I wouldn’t be writing this. We’re human and every human has the experience of failing. (There, I said it – the “f” word.) What happens after we fail is

Caught myself whining again recently and even though my circumstances seemed whine-worthy at the time, it was just a few minutes later when I heard about some legitimate catastrophe. “Oops,” I thought. “There I go again.” Fortunately I had only been whining for a relatively short period of time. I took a few slow deep

I saw this quote recently – “You’re not going to master the rest of your life in one day. Just relax. Master the day. Then just keep doing that every day.” I immediately liked the quote and the sentiment behind it. But after a little pondering, I thought I’d re-write it, and since no one

Perfect is such a powerful word. It usually conjures up feelings of deep satisfaction, accomplishment, completion, and pride. It’s also – at least for some of us – a deeply troublesome word, often stirring up a profound sense of frustration, feelings of inadequacy, waves of hopelessness, and caverns of dark despair. When one unfairly holds

The troubles of this world can sometimes make us little people feel powerless. And certainly there are situations that are beyond our control. However, I am often surprised by how much personal power I hold. When wielded responsibly and skillfully that power can change the course of a moment, and hour, or a day for

Right? We may as well “let” it rain rather than hate it, wish against it, or try to pretend it isn’t raining. Rain happens and I usually choose to suppose that the rain happens for a reason. Then it’s not only neutral, but it actually feels positive. Decades ago, whenever there was a thunderstorm, my

Remember the words of a beloved clown: “You’ll never find a rainbow if you’re looking down.” -Charlie Chaplin Of course you can literally look “up” (skyward) or you can try to look “up” (cheerful.)
